Tennis chronology in Russia 
The history of development of tennis in Russia has its own remarkable date – August 18, 1878. It was on this day that the Declaration of the world development of lawn tennis in Russia was proclaimed by an initiative group that united tennis amateurs of Petersburg, Moscow, Kharkov and Riga and was headed by D. Soloviev, a famous writer of the epoque. By the way, Moscow group enjoyed a great popularity with the family of L. Tolstoy.
Before the revolution and from the very beginning of its development tennis was a game mainly for the wealthy. Princes and counts, manufacturers and businessmen, merchants, officers – these were the members of the most part of tennis clubs.
By the beginning of the XX century there had been 12 big tennis clubs in Russia. They were located mainly in Saint Petersburg and in Moscow.
Russian sportsmen have been taking part in Davis Cup competitions since 1962, in Wimbledon tournament – since 1958, in French Open – since 1961, in the European Championship – since 1969.
