Tennis chronology in Russia

The history of development of tennis in Russia has its own remarkable date – August 18, 1878. It was on this day that the Declaration of the world development of lawn tennis in Russia was proclaimed by an initiative group that united tennis amateurs of Petersburg, Moscow, Kharkov and Riga and was headed by D. Soloviev, a famous writer of the epoque. By the way, Moscow group enjoyed a great popularity with the family of L. Tolstoy.

Before the revolution and from the very beginning of its development tennis was a game mainly for the wealthy. Princes and counts, manufacturers and businessmen, merchants, officers – these were the members of the most part of tennis clubs.

By the beginning of the XX century there had been 12 big tennis clubs in Russia. They were located mainly in Saint Petersburg and in Moscow.

Russian sportsmen have been taking part in Davis Cup competitions since 1962, in Wimbledon tournament – since 1958, in French Open – since 1961, in the European Championship – since 1969.

1890 The first book about tennis by M. Volkov is published

1901 The first championship of Moscow

1903 The first Saint Petersburg open championship (which also becomes the first international tournament in Russia). For the first time Russian tennis players take part in competitions abroad (Stockholm)

1913 Lahti tennis club joins International Lawn Tennis Union

1913-14 The first international matches of the Russian team – with the teams of England (1913) and France (1914)

1918 The first Moscow Championship after the civil war

1920 The first match Moscow – Petrograd

1920 The debut of a Russian tennis palyer (A. Macferson) at Wimbledon

1924-92 The participation of Russian tennis players in various international competitions including АТР and WTA tours (since 1990)

1927 The first championship of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialistic Republic

1928 The all-union games

1924-91 Participation of Russian tennis players in USSR championships

1989 The first WTA tour in the USSR-Russia

1990 The first АТР -То ur in the USSR-Russia (Kremlin Cup)

1993 All-Russia Tennis Association joins International Tennis Federation and European Tennis Association as the successor of the Tennis Federations of the USSR and the CIS (Вступление ВТА в ИТФ и ЕТА )
